Typing in the Safety Zone

After using the new keyboard configuration for several weeks, the workers gave the new system positive evaluations. Not only did the results of the statistical analysis confirm their impressions, but innovative visualization techniques allowed Hedge and his associates to see how the new system works.

Working with Cornell Theory Center visualization specialist Bruce Land, Hedge and his associate Simonetta Rodriquez devised a way of watching an individual type. By tracking the data in three dimensions and relating the records to a neutral zone of movement derived from generalized empirical data, they could see when and for how long the wrist was overextended in such a way that would place stress on the carpal tunnel.
